George James Coates (1869-1930) Australia

Biographical Information

Born at Emerald Hill in Melbourne in 1869, the son of an artist lithographer. At the age of 15 he was apprenticed to the Colonial Victorian stained glass firm Ferguson & Urie, and studied at night school during his apprenticeship.

In 1896 he won the National Gallery Travelling Scholarship and went to Paris to further his studies.

He studied at the Académie Julien in Paris and exhibited at the Old and New Salon and at the Royal Academy. Coates was awarded Honourable Mention at the Old Salon in 1911 and the same honour at the Carnegie Institute.

He was invited to become a member of the International Society of Painters, Gravers and Etchers and of the Royal Portrait Society. He became first an associate, and then, in 1927, a full member of the Paris Salon.

During World War I he was appointed an official war artist.

His works are represented in several state and provincial collections.

He was married to artist Dora Meeson.
