George Thompson Pritchard (1878-1962) New Zealand

Biographical Information

George Thompson Pritchard (1878-1962) was born in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay and began his artistic education at the Elam School of Fine Art. He continued his extensive education, furthering his training at the Melbourne Academy of Fine Arts, South Kensington School of Art (London), the Julien Academy (Paris) and the Van der Veldt Academy (Amsterdam). He finally settled in California in 1935. Pritchard was painting in the United States at the time of the Battle of the River Plate. Enthralled by the newspaper accounts of the battle, he decided to paint this work illustrating the Graf Spee's dying moments with the Achilles, Exter and Ajax in the distance. It is to be noted that the artist had never actually seen the Graf Spee, Pritchard using artistic license, hense its resemblance to a German WWI battleship. The Admiral Graf Spee was one of the most famous German naval warships of World War II. She was sent to the Atlantic Ocean as a commerce raider in 1939, where she sank nine Allied merchant ships. Numerous British hunting groups were assigned to find her, with three British ships finally tracking her down in December 1939. The Battle of the River Plate ensued, during which the Graf Spee was damaged. She docked for repairs in the neutral port of Montevideo, but was forced by international law to leave within 72 hours. Faced with what he believed to be overwhelming odds, the captain scuttled his ship rather than risk the lives of his crew. The artist is represented in a number of New Zealand Public Collections including Alexander Turnbull Library, Te Papa Tongarewa, Bishop Suter Gallery and Havelock North City Council Collection Edit or add to this biography
