George Washington Lambert (1873-1930) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Russia in 1873 of English and American parents, Lambert came to Australia in 1887, studying at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney before receiving a travelling scholarship which enabled him to study in Europe and England.

Lambert exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New Salon and the International Society. He was awarded the silver medal at the International Society in 1912, and made a member of the Royal Academy in 1922, being the only Australian to attain the honour to that time.

Much of his best work was done as a war artist during World War I.

On his return to Australia his popularity grew to such an extent that he was probably the best known artist of his time. His work is widely represented in all state and major provincial collections. He died in 1930. Edit or add to this biography
