Horatio Gordon Robley (1840-1930) New Zealand

Biographical Information

Born on the Island of Madeira in 1840, Horatio Robley arrived in Auckland in 1864 as ensign in the 68th Durham Light Infantry. He was present at the battle of Gate Pa and other wars and made drawings of moko, paintings of war scenes and portraits of Maori chiefs. He became very interested in the Maori people and their lives, and in 1896 produced the publication Moko: Or Maori Tattooing. Robley left New Zealand in 1865, rose to the rank of Major General, and died in London in 1930. Edit or add to this biography
