James Haughton (Haughton) Forrest (1826-1925) Australia

Biographical Information

Captain Haughton Forrest was born in Boulogne, France, on 28th December, 1925.

The family seat was Forrest Lodge, Berkshire, a few miles from Windsor Castle, where his father, Captain T. A. Forrest, was Queen Victoria's equerry. The Royal family liked Forrest's paintings, especially the paintings of the Royal yacht and other yachting subjects.

The then Prince of Wales purchased a number of paintings.

As a young man Forrest served in the Royal Monmouth 31st Light Infantry and is believed to have retired with the courtesy rank of Captain and was later employed by the postal authority in London.

He and his family arrived in Australia in 1876 and he became the Postmaster at Sorrell.

He was commissioned to paint a series of postage stamps of Tasmania.

Although best known for his marine subjects, Forrest also painted numerous Tasmanian landscapes.

He is believed to have exhibited his Australian paintings in Hobart in 1877. He continued painting into his ninety-ninth year, dying in Hobart in 1925.
